Like a lot of people, we imagine that you have kids, and that having a strong air conditioning system is something that is important to having everyone living in real comfort when it counts most. Yes, that means the summer months.

it is during that period of time that your children will spend a lot more time at home, because after all, they are not going to be in school. That means activity that won’t generally be supervised al that closely.

Maybe the air conditioning is not your big priority. We don’t know about that. But we can assure you that taking of the AC and conserving energy is not a priority that kids think about.

So perhaps you want to drive a few things home that they’ll understand, to make sure that you don’t have a runaway energy bill at the end of each month.

Let’s discuss a few of them:

1) Tell them to keep the doors shut when they stay inside or go outside. Kids have a terrible habit of leaving doors wide open because, what the hell do they care, right? You’ve got to school them that they are letting the cold air out and the warm air in.

2) Tell them to shut the lights when they leave a room. Not only are they going to waste your energy when they leave lights on throughout the house, but they are going to create heat, and heat makes the AC work that much harder. Stress and strain are no good for the long-term viability of that unit.

3) Tell them to take care of the windows. This means a couple of different things. First of all, they can’t leave the windows open when it is very hot outside. This is something kids might or might not do, but when they do it they won’t shut the window. Also, tell them to make sure they keep the drapes or the blinds shut, as heat can get into the house very easily if it is just coming through unfettered through a window pane.

4) Tell them that if they are going to play, don’t do it near the outside AC unit. If they don’t know where the outside AC unit is, point it out to them. The last thing you want is a football hitting that thing, or something getting into the unit to corrupt it so it stops working. Then you’ll have serious problems!
