AC Installation in San Diego County
New central AC, split-system, and packaged air conditioning installation for San Diego homeowners. NATE-certified technicians, upfront pricing, family-owned since 1995.
AC Installation Across San Diego County
When your air conditioner finally gives out during a San Diego heat wave — or you’re building out a home in El Cajon, Chula Vista, or Escondido that needs cooling that keeps up — you want a straight answer on what installation involves, what it costs, and who’s doing the work. Airmaxx has installed central AC, heat pump, and ductless systems across San Diego County since 1995. We size every system to your home and your climate zone, pull the permits, and stand behind the install.
Coastal homes in La Jolla, Pacific Beach, and Encinitas have different cooling needs than inland homes in Santee, Poway, or Ramona — and we size accordingly. An oversized system short-cycles and never dehumidifies; an undersized one runs all day in an inland August and still can’t hold 75°. Getting the sizing right is the single biggest factor in whether you’re happy with the system for the next 15 years.
AC system performance after proper installation
A performance-focused HVAC installation delivers measurable outcomes that define how the system operates once it is in use:
- more even temperatures across living areas and bedrooms
- balanced airflow delivery across conditioned spaces
- steadier operation during warm conditions
- reduced cycling and more stable system response
- controlled humidity behavior as part of overall cooling performance
- cooling performance that remains predictable as demand changes
These outcomes reflect an AC system configured to operate within defined performance limits, supporting consistent cooling behavior across real operating conditions.

AC Installation Cost in San Diego
Most San Diego homeowners pay between $6,500 and $12,000 for a complete AC installation. That range covers the equipment, labor, permits, and removal of your old system — what you actually land on depends on your home's size, system type, and the condition of your existing ductwork.
| System Type | Typical Installed Cost | When It Applies |
|---|---|---|
| Central AC system | $6,500 – $12,000 | Homes with existing ductwork |
| Heat pump system | $7,000 – $13,500 | Heating and cooling in one system |
| Mini-split system | $2,500 – $6,500 per zone | Homes without ductwork or zoned needs |
| Ductwork replacement | $1,000 – $6,000 | When ducts are damaged or undersized |
By home size: 1,000–1,400 sq ft typically runs $6,500–$8,500; 1,500–2,200 sq ft runs $8,000–$11,000; and 2,500–3,500+ sq ft runs $10,000–$15,000+.

How Airmaxx Engineers Air Conditioning Performance During Installation
Air conditioning performance is established during installation, not after startup. Cooling capacity, airflow delivery, and control behavior must be coordinated to ensure the AC system operates within defined operational limits. This section explains how Airmaxx installs air conditioning systems to preserve performance from day one.
A system-level approach to AC installation
Airmaxx installs air conditioning systems as integrated cooling systems rather than isolated components. Cooling capacity is selected based on actual load conditions, airflow paths are planned to support controlled distribution, and zoning is integrated to improve temperature regulation across different areas of the home. These decisions are made before equipment is installed, so the cooling behavior is predictable once the system is running.
This system-level structure guides how the AC system is installed, connected, and configured, ensuring that airflow delivery, zone interaction, and control response work together rather than compete.
Cooling system planning
Before installation begins, performance targets are set for the air conditioning system. These targets specify how cooling should be provided, how quickly spaces should respond, and how the system should behave as demand varies throughout the day.
Airflow distribution for air conditioning
During installation, airflow is carefully managed to ensure even cooling throughout the home. Duct connections, airflow pathways, and distribution are adjusted so conditioned air reaches each room within set limits, maintaining stable temperatures without creating excessive pressure or noise.
AC system setup and validation
After AC installation, the air conditioning system is configured and validated against the planned performance targets. Airflow delivery is verified, controls are aligned, and static pressure testing is completed to confirm the system operates within proper operating limits.

Air Conditioning System Options and Configurations
Air conditioning systems can be configured in different ways depending on how cooling is delivered throughout the home. Capacity control, airflow behavior, and system response vary with the selected AC system type and its integration into the space.
Choosing the correct configuration is less about equipment labels and more about how cooling must behave across different rooms, schedules, and usage patterns. This section outlines the main AC system options we install and how they are typically applied.
Types of air conditioning systems we install:
Single-Stage Air Conditioning Systems
Operate at a constant output level and are usually used in homes with steady cooling needs and simpler layouts.
Multi-Stage Air Conditioning Systems
Adjust cooling output in discrete steps to enhance temperature control and comfort under different conditions.
Variable-Capacity Air Conditioning Systems
Continuously adjust cooling output to meet real-time demand, ensuring precise temperature control and stable system operation.
Split-System Air Conditioning
Traditional indoor and outdoor setups are connected with ductwork to circulate cooling throughout the home.
Packaged Air Conditioning Systems
Self-contained systems used where space or layout favors a compact installation approach.

What an Air Conditioning System is Designed to Do
An air conditioning system is designed to remove heat from the home and distribute cooled air evenly across the spaces where comfort matters most. When applied correctly, it maintains steady indoor temperatures, manages humidity, and supports quiet, consistent operation during warm conditions.
AC performance depends on more than just cooling capacity. Airflow paths, room usage, ceiling heights, and how spaces gain heat throughout the day all affect the effectiveness of cooling delivery. A system that is aligned with these factors can respond smoothly to changing conditions and maintain comfort without overworking.
In homes where air conditioning is properly planned and installed, cooling feels stable and predictable rather than uneven or reactive. The system supports comfort across living areas, bedrooms, and shared spaces while operating in a controlled, balanced way.

Airmaxx installed the hvac system for our house a few years back, which was a smooth experience. The control board malfunctioned recently. The team was able to promptly come over to check it out. The installation manager Roma is very knowledgeable and friendly to work with, who identified the cause, provided education, and replaced the board and air filter for us. I truly appreciate Roma and Airmaxx.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
I used jpm construction to fix small water damage from a leak due to a failed condensation pump. They replaced the pump w the wrong voltage and it lead to worse damage. Jeff came by and diagnosed the problem quickly and was able to come by shortly after to replace the pump w the right one. I will prob stick to specialists like airmaxx moving forward. I would have saved myself a lot of headache and money if I had gone w them from the beginning. Days later my capacitor blew out and Cory came and fix it in under an hr. Jeff and Cory were very communicative quick and friendly. I would reach out to airmaxx for future air handling issuesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.

In the middle of a heat wave, our AC stopped working. I searched online and found a few different companies, but most of the ones I called couldn’t come out the same day. Airmaxx was able to fit us in. Although the receptionist could have been friendlier, I was able to schedule a same-day appointment, and the technician arrived before the start of his expected time window. He quickly inspected our AC units, identified the problem, and fixed it in about 20 minutes. He was prompt, professional, and helpful. Our experience with the technician was exceptional, and I’m so grateful we were able to get the issue resolved within just a few hours. I’ll be calling Airmaxx again when we’re ready to replace our unit, and I highly recommend them.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
I contacted Airmaxx last night (Saturday) because my AC was not cooling my home. They responded quickly with an appointment the next morning Sunday at 9 am. Dima arrived and quickly assessed the problem and fixed it. He was very professional and kind. The cost was reasonable and I am very appreciative. I will surely use them for any future issues and highly recommend them to residents of Chula Vista. Outstanding company!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.

These guys were great. On a 105° day they came to us the same morning we called and had a new capacitor installed within 15 minutes. What could’ve been a really bad day turned out great.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
Today I had new heating and air conditioning systems installed in my house. I had used AirMaxx in the past for maintenance and believed them to be honest and fairly priced. I had gotten a couple of estimates from other HVAC companies to replace and install new units and received the best price and the most honest assessment from Cory at AirMaxx. Today was the big day; Three technicians showed up bright and early. Alex, Anton and Roman were a great team! They worked so well together. My heater is located under the house and was a challenge but they took it in stride and got everything installed in a timely manner. I will happily recommend AirMaxx!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
I am very impressed with your company. I requested an inspection service on my HVA C system since it is over 10 years old. I was given a cost estimate of $49. Service technician Edgar arrived right on time and called ahead to confirm and let me know he would arrive in about 10 minutes. He reset the thermostat, reviewed the entire system explaining all the parts and functions. He told me the system looked fine and didn’t need any repairs. It’s great dealing with an honest company and knowledgeable technician.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.

I have dealt with AirMaxx for years when they installed an updated HVAC system for me. This time we have installed two HVAC systems and I had my current system checked out. The owner, Alex Glozman, is just terrific and his team, many of whom I’ve been trained in engineering, are very professional and competent.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.

Started with a in closet furnace and wanted to upgrade to a full Hot/Cold HVAC system... Called Airmaxx for an in house estimate who sent Randy Issak within a couple of days. Randy thoroughly looked over my current installation and sat down to go over the details and quote the job right then and there: This was not an easy installation as there was no exchanger connection to the outside, the electrical panel had no open 220V slots and a lot of the duct work was VERY old. Even though there was some uncertainty about the actual fine details of this job Randy indicated that once the price was set, they would eat any extra cost that popped up. Reasonable price with no possibility of ups and extras sounded pretty good. I really liked how Randy went through all the available options so I could choose a system that had the performance I was looking for while not breaking the bank. On top of that, Airmaxx takes care of all the permitting and inspections so it could not have been easier as a homeowner. The date was set and the crew showed up right on time (None of this 8 hour window BS!) and got to work. In 6 hours they completed the job and we had AC for the first time in 30 years. They managed to do the whole thing with only one drywall cut and that in the ceiling of a hall closet so for all practical purposes NO CUTS AT ALL! They also reorganized the breaker box to add the extra 220 breaker for the HVAC using more compact modules so that all the previous connections were maintained. Very impressed with the whole process (and we just passed the ECC inspection as well!).+1Verified

I had my AC repaired by Dima. Very nice man. He explained to me what was wrong and repaired it right away. It was heaven to feel the AC on and working during that heat wave a couple weeks ago. I’ve used Airmaxx a few times over the years. They are a great company.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
Airmaxx did a great job installing my new air conditioner, heater, and thermostat. My older system was 25 years old and needed a full replacement. They offered me a price much lower than the first estimate I received from another company. Airmaxx did not try to sell me anything I didn't need. They agreed with the first estimate that I did not need new ducting or insulation. The installers were professional and got the job done. I am very happy with my new systemVerified
Quick response. Quickly assessed the situation and provided options. I would recommend using Airmaxx.Verified
Super fast service and the technician was extremely professional and obviously an expert in his field. Definitely one of the most reasonably priced in the surrounding area. They specialize in only HVAC, so they don't mark up their prices like other "one stop shops" that market everywhere and charge you for a simple consult. And they don't send out a green kid, fresh out of technical school which is much preferred over most places you come across these days.Verified
Very efficient, helpful at time of making decision. Good honest price despite being a big company. Solid installation of new ac units. No issues so far!Verified
They came early. Technician was knowledgeable.l and communicated well. Reasonable fix. Thank you Jesus.Verified
Had a great experience with AirMaxx. Great service, fair prices. Jesus was fantastic and was a pleasure to have working on our AC.Verified
Super responsive and helpful! Came out within 24 hrs and diagnosed and fixed the issue right away.Verified
The AC at my parents' house stopped working today -- one of the hottest, most humid days of the year. My parents are getting up there in age, so this was more than just an inconvenience. I contacted several HVAC companies, including Airmaxx. Aleksandr called me back almost immediately. I asked if there was any chance someone could come out that day, even though it was Sunday of Labor Day weekend. To my surprise, he said he would. Aleksandr showed up promptly and went right to work. He quickly diagnosed the problem, explained what needed to be done, and did it. He was professional, knowledgeable, and efficient. I really appreciate Aleksandr going out of his way to help on a holiday weekend, especially when we were in a bind. Great service and great communication. Airmaxx and Aleksandr will be our first call for any future HVAC needs. Highly recommend!Verified
My air conditioner was not cooling the air. It was a Saturday evening of a holiday weekend. Early Sunday morning, I made some calls. Airmaxx was able to come out and see what the problem was. Actually, I wasn't setting the thermostat low enough to trigger the start of the cooling of the AC. Alexander, the technician, checked out everything, and explained things very well. It ended up being a tune up, and giving me peace of mind. I would use Airmaxx again.Verified
Super friendly and easy to work with. Didnt charge me anything to diagnose the problem.Verified
We have used Airmaxx in the past to service our AC and furnace, and they were great to work with. This time we decided to replace a nearly 40 year-old 4 ton air conditioner and gas furnace, getting rid of a noisy and inefficient system. The old Lennox was built like a tank, but the R 22 refrigerant was nearly impossible to get in the old girl was just flat out wearing out. I contacted Airmaxx because of our great experience with them in the past, and Gene was able to come out within a couple of days and discuss our needs. In the meantime I did a ton of research using AI around my specific situation, and I had a pretty good idea that a heat pump was going to be our answer. Gene and I had a nice talk and walked around and looked at the existing equipment, he inspected the ductwork, and agreed that a nice Carrier mid range variable speed heat pump would be a great solution for us. It would be dramatically more efficient and quiet, especially since it was variable speed. Within a day he had provided a couple of quotes, and through very timely back-and-forth we narrowed in on a communicating heat pump system. The quote was very good, but I didn't know how good until I ran the proposal through my beloved AI and then compared proposals from four additional companies. Strike that. One of the companies that came out said they couldn't get anywhere close to Airmaxx's price so they didn't even bother to provide a proposal. There were some clarifications needed to the proposal and Gene was very quick to make updates until it had everything covered. A big differentiator was that not only did they provide a 10 year warranty, but that warranty did not require a service contract like some others do. Two weeks later the system was installed and we could not be happier. Igor and Max, the installers, showed up on time in the morning and completed the job in about six hours. This heat pump is so different than the typical on/off AC from 39 years ago that it's hard to compare. It is extremely quiet, adjusting its speed to the cooling needs to maximize efficiency, and even a full blast it was nowhere near as loud as what was removed. It took some finagling to get the thermostat connected to the phone app, but now I can control my heating and cooling system from anywhere. The installers hauled away all of the old equipment, inspected and repaired my ductwork, and cleaned up after themselves with no issues. They didn't even mind me watching them for a little bit (I tried to stay out of their way, but I'm always curious about technology) I can't say enough about Airmaxx whether you are getting service or a large equipment install. Not only are they responsive and professional, but I found them to be significantly less expensive than other proposals, even those with lesser solutions. Always make sure to get comparative quotes, but definitely make sure you get one from Airmaxx.+8Verified

We had a heat pump installed in April. The AC was working well but I could not find where the condensate was going. Carlos Garcia came out to help us. He was very polite and efficient and careful with our home. He showed us photos of the installation in our one room cellar where we could see the pump that sent condensate out and he found the outside place where the condensate leaves our pump and goes into the garden. We had been worried about this for awhile and are so pleased Carlos could solve our problem. We recommend Airmaxx without reservation.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Angie's List.

We contacted Airmaxx in May 2019 to replace the undersized central AC system in our home. They assessed our needs. For us, we wanted a quieter unit, is is right outside a bedroom, and better dehumidification. The equipment specification they chose was perfect for us. The house is 15 to 20 percent less humid than before, the unit is quiet and does not run all day to maintain cooler temperatures like the old compressor. We had some hot weather since they did the job and it works great. Contact Airmaxx, you will be happy you did.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Angie's List.
Alex arrived, was quick to figure out what was needed to help our 23 yr old A/C and heater make it through another season; changed out the condenser and installed a "condenser saver" to help nurse it along and installed our EcoBee smart thermostat no charge and was able to reroute our dripping secondary condensation drip line into the sink drain so not always dripping on side of house all quickly and for a reasonable fee. Giving us a good HVAC replacement and duct improvement recommendation/proposal for us to consider for the Fall. Overall a fine experience and nice, efficient service pro.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Angie's List.
Alex of AirMaxx came to our house within 30 minutes of our call. The outside unit wasn't working properly (sometimes the fan came on, sometimes not) and airflow was tepid. The house never cooled despite having other A/C techs work on the system (sent from our home warranty co.). Alex of AirMaxx ran diagnostics on our A/C system and did a tune-up. Within 20-25 minutes we had a nicely cooled house! We were impressed with Alex. Once the A/C was working, he explained items of concern with our system and gave his recommendations. He was responsive, professional, and he solved our problem. Thank you Alex! And thank you AirMaxx!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Angie's List.

They came out on the spur of the moment (Sunday morning). They added coolant but said there was no guarantee it would last long due to leakage (we'd been told this 2 years ago, so we just hoped we would get through the summer, but knew our unit was on it's last legs. The unit only cooled for a couple of days. We decided to have Airmaxx replace the unit. They applied the cost of the service call ($550) to the new HVAC unit. They were able to schedule a crane and install the new unit just 2 days later. They bent over backwards to make this happen quickly during the heat wave.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Angie's List.
The whole process of removing our old system and installing the new one was fast and efficient. The crew was polite, cleaned up all the debris and took away all the old HVAC parts. We could not have been more pleased. The cost was exactly as quoted. And it was the lowest of three bidsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Angie's List.
a monday morning call led to two techs at my door in about two hours. they gave me a 3 hour window, and called 15 minutes before they arrived. after about 15 or 20 minutes they found the problem to be the electrical outlet. because they were here i also asked rhem if they could install a different thermostat, which I provided. they did that for a very reasonable fee.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Angie's List.
Our AC went out late Friday afternoon. That night I filled out a contact form on their website and got both a call and an email back Saturday morning. Alex was able to drive out and look at our system within an hour. He replaced a part in our blower and put in a new filter. Everything seemed okay until a couple hours later when we realized the motor was much louder than it should have been. We called the main number and set up a new appointment for Monday. Alex returned as promised and made an adjustment. We are now very happy with the performance of the system. An overall good experience! I will contact Airmaxx again the next time we have an AC problem.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Angie's List.
Our appointment window was from 4:00 to 6:00. We received a call from dispatch at 3:20 stating he would arrive around 4:00. Alex showed up at 3:50. Two days after the papers were signed, the crew showed up. They actually got here 20 minutes before the scheduled time, which was fine with me. Seven and one-half hours later I had a completely new heating and air conditioning system installed and running. I was quite impressed with the efficiency of the installers. The old A/C compressor was undersized for the my house. The new unit cools the house MUCH better than the old one. I am very happy with the job done and the new equipment.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Angie's List.

We were satisfied. Well, I guess it's been about a month. So we can't judge the furnance, but so far everything has been fine. They were very quick to come out here when we contacted them. After they told us what the problem was, we decided to replace our system. They gave us an appointment within a few days so I say so far so good. I can't evaluate the furnace but the air conditioner has been working fine. Actually, we did mention that we had one room that was always particularly warm and they put in additional vents. They just tried to help us make that room more comfortable. It seems to be working. They try to improve your system if they think there's a way to be able to do that.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Angie's List.
It was very reasonable. They were excellent. A team of Russian men came in and they spoke Russian, there was one that actually spoke English and they told me what they were doing, how long it would take, and all that. Each of them knew what they were doing and they worked very well together. I was amazed. It was excellent, excellent. They were really quick. We actually had the company that put in the units at our present house was the one that gave us a quote for the furnace and air conditioning for the Spring Valley house and it was more than double what Airmaxx quoted. It was kind of a open end thing, it could be more depending on what they run into. I don't remember them not being on time. I would of remembered if they were not.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Angie's List.
They have reasonable prices. We signed up for regular maintenance up in Spring Valley and they would call up and say "It's time for your a/c check and let's make an appointment." They were right on the ball. They were the ones that installed the furnace and air conditioning in the house. They were really good and when we got here, I just went ahead and switched the maintenance to this house here. I like them very much. They unit here was already installed and it's a York and we're stuck with it. We're going to try and stick with as long as we can, but we are going to go back with the brand we had at the other house. Everybody said "That's a wonderful furnace and air conditioning unit you had." Everyone that came in said that. We had no complaints with it. We signed up for a 3 year maintenance plan. That includes 2 service calls a year.Load more
The AC Installation Process: What to Expect
Most San Diego AC installations are finished in a single day. Jobs that involve new ductwork, an electrical upgrade, or a switch to a heat pump usually take two to three. Here’s how a typical install runs from the first visit to the final walkthrough:
- In-home assessment. Before we provide a quote, we analyze your home to recommend what is right for you. This is the step that prevents the short-cycling and hot-and-cold rooms an oversized unit causes.
- Written quote. You get a clear quote covering the scope of work, permits, and removal of your old system — so there are no surprises once work starts.
- Old system removal and prep. We recover the old refrigerant to code, remove the existing equipment, and prep the electrical, pad, and duct connections for the new system.
- Installation and configuration. The new condenser, coil, line set, and any duct connections are installed and sealed, then the thermostat and controls are wired and set up.
- Permit and HERS testing. We can handle HERS testing under Title 24 and city permitting.
- Commissioning and walkthrough. We verify the refrigerant charge, airflow, and temperature split, then walk you through thermostat operation, maintenance, and your warranty before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers to common questions about air conditioning installation, system selection, performance expectations, and what to consider before moving forward.
How do I know if my home needs a new air conditioning system?
Common indicators include inconsistent cooling, high energy consumption, frequent repairs, or an AC system that struggles on hot days despite proper operation.
Is air conditioning installation just replacing the existing unit?
No. Proper AC installation involves evaluating airflow, system sizing, controls, and how cooling is distributed throughout the home, not just swapping equipment.
How is the correct AC system size determined?
System size is determined by evaluating the cooling load, home layout, insulation, window exposure, and airflow requirements, rather than relying solely on the existing unit size.
Can a new AC system improve uneven temperatures in different rooms?
Yes. When airflow distribution and system configuration are addressed during installation, room-to-room temperature differences can often be reduced.
Do I need ductwork changes for a new AC installation?
That depends on duct condition, layout, and airflow capacity. Ductwork is reviewed during installation planning to ensure it supports proper cooling delivery.
What AC system types do you install?
We install single-stage, multi-stage, and variable-capacity air conditioning systems, as well as split and packaged configurations, depending on home requirements.
How long does air conditioning installation usually take?
Most AC installations are completed within one to two days, depending on system type, ductwork considerations, and overall project scope.
Will a new AC system be compatible with my existing heating system?
In many cases, yes. Compatibility is reviewed during consultation to ensure cooling integrates correctly with existing heating equipment or future upgrades.
Does AC installation include system testing after installation?
Yes. System operation is checked after installation to ensure airflow, controls, and cooling response align with the planned configuration.
Is AC installation a good time to consider zoning or system upgrades?
Yes. Installation is often the best time to evaluate zoning, controls, or airflow improvements since the system is already being configured.
Do you perform static pressure testing after AC installation?
Yes. Static pressure testing is included in system validation to confirm airflow conditions and ensure the system operates within proper limits.
